UV-Light for the treatment of skin diseases

UV-light can successfully be used for the remedy of the following skin diseases

Successful treatment with UV-Light

The before mentioned skin diseases can successfully be treated with UV-light

The before mentioned skin diseases can successfully be treated with a  UV-A light from 320nm to 380nm and UV-B light from 280nm to 320nm is used.

Radiation instruments covering a broad spectrum produce an UV-light which should be very similar in character to sunlight. Radiation instruments covering a small spectrum of 311 nm wavelength can effectively be used in treatment of the before mentioned diseases.

In case of the PUVA therapy (Psoralens UV-A) first a radio sensitising agent, such as 8-Methoxypsoralen is employed which makes skin more sensible to the influence of light. This medicament can be given as pill, bath salt, cream or solution. After that an UV-A light therapy, having less energy, can be carried out.

Effect of UV-Light therapy

UV-therapy has a growth-inhibiting effect and can stop this disorder

In case of psoriasis there is a metabolic disorder of the outer skin layers, causing an increased production and  scaling. Allergic diseases, such as dermatitis, are caused by overactive immune systems. UV-light has the capability of soothing the immune system in the outer skin layers.

In case of Vitiligo, UV-light therapy is capable of stimulating the pigment-making cells of the skin (or melanocytes) to produce the pigment melanin. Melanin is, hereby, transferred to the surrounding skin cells which change into darker colour and make the skin look darker.

UV-light therapy additionally stimulates the production of vitamin D3. Vitamin D plays an important role in the metabolism of calcium and is known for its positive effect on bone structure.
